Whale Safari in Nuuk

The fiords of Greenland have always been center for people due to the high amount of resources, fish, whales, and reindeer. Recently the fiord of Nuuk became protected for humpback whales – meaning this is the only place in Greenland where they can’t be hunted.

We find, that 3 hours is the perfect time in Nuuk to get to the whales.

But of course, we do not offer any form of guarantee of seeing the whales as these are wild animals, that move around at their own free will.

The deep fiords are in some places all the way down to 600 meters in depth, which is the perfect place for the great gentle giants, the humpback whales.

The humpback whale is one of the animals in the world that moves the furthest as they travel between the Arctic and the Caribbean and other warmer seas.

They come to Greenland during the summer, from June-September to eat large amounts of krill and small fish. The whale typically comes from Haiti and Puerto Rico, where they breed in winter. Humpback whales can grow up to 18 meters long and can weigh up to 30 tons.

The humpback whale is the whale we usually see in the fiords around Nuuk, and it is easily recognizable on the beautiful tail. To experience these giants of the sea at close range is almost a spiritual experience that overwhelms many.
